Treatment

As you walk into the theater, your ticket is torn by an individual who looks as if she really hates being there. After she takes your ticket, she stamps your hand and tells you that “you cannot smoke inside.” As you walk though a dark and dingy hallway you hear the screams of concert goers and you notice a vendor to your left. This vendor is selling shirts, books, and posters that all say “Anti-Racist Action” and giving away free stickers and magazines that all look homemade. When you go in for a closer look you notice that the vender is also selling books such as the Communist Manifesto and The Ultimate Vegetarian Cookbook. After a few minutes, you enter a dimly lit theater and hear a variety of punk music playing. You notice that there are no seats and many people milling around waiting for the installation to start. Finally the lights dim and everyone begins to clap.

The first thing you hear is a scratchy voice coming from the speakers above your head and the speakers in the front of the house. It is coughing and talking about the origins of punk culture. When he mentions the Sex Pistols, you see an image of their lead singer, Johnny Rotten, projected on the wall at the front of the theater. As the first voice talks about punk music going mainstream, you hear a young voice at the far left of the theater screaming “Greenday are fucking sellouts!” and you see a picture of the band Greenday being interviewed on MTV on the left wall. As the installation progresses, you also hear a variety of punk music and regret not bringing earplugs because the music is so loud. As the music plays, you see quick flashes of still images from punk culture projected on all three walls. Sometimes these images are the same three images at the same time and other times there is only one image at a time.

As the piece comes to a close, the lights of the house come up and you stick your finger in your ear with the hopes of getting the ringing out, but you have no luck. You also stretch your legs because you have been standing for the past half-hour and start to feel pain in your feet. As people pile out of the theater, you notice a large crowd around the vendor table and people buying anti-racist t-shirts. When you finally get outside you see an even larger crowd of people smoking.
